What it is
slack-gif-creator is an Agent Skill that Anthropic publishes in the anthropics/skills repo. The SKILL.md calls it knowledge and utilities for creating animated GIFs optimized for Slack, for requests like "make me a GIF of X doing Y for Slack." It starts from the Slack requirements listed in the SKILL.md: 128×128 recommended for emoji GIFs, 480×480 for message GIFs, 10 to 30 frames per second (FPS), 48 to 128 colors, and under 3 seconds for emoji. The AI draws the animation frame by frame in Python with Pillow (PIL) using circles, polygons, lines and rectangles, or works from an image you upload, either splitting it into frames or using it only as a reference for colors and style. The bundled GIFBuilder then assembles and compresses the frames; emoji mode resizes to 128×128, caps the palette at 48 colors and cuts the animation to about 12 frames. A validator checks dimensions, file size and frame count. The SKILL.md also explains how to build shake, pulse, bounce, spin, fade, slide, zoom and particle-burst animations, with easing functions such as bounce and elastic. What sets it apart is that there are no templates or stock graphics: the AI draws every GIF in code on the spot, and the SKILL.md deliberately avoids emoji fonts because they render unreliably across platforms.
Who it's for:people who want custom emoji or small animations for their team's Slack. You'll need an AI tool that can run Python, such as Claude Code; readers who never touch code will find it hard going.
Before you start: it runs locally, reading the images you give it and writing a GIF file. It doesn't connect to Slack, needs no Slack account, and doesn't upload or send anything; you post the GIF to Slack yourself. Install the Python dependencies first: the SKILL.md lists pillow, imageio and numpy, and requirements.txt also lists imageio-ffmpeg. The validator checks only dimensions, size and frame count, so whether it looks good is up to you, and saving overwrites a file with the same name. Make sure you have the rights to any image you upload and any person shown in it. Slack's actual upload limits are whatever Slack's own documentation says. To install, run /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills in Claude Code and then install the example-skills plugin (which installs 12 example Skills together), or copy just the skills/slack-gif-creator folder. The repo README says these example Skills are already available on paid Claude.ai plans; check the official site for plan details. The README also says the Skills in this repo are for demonstration and educational purposes only, that what you get from Claude may differ from what they show, and that you should test them thoroughly in your own environment before relying on them for anything critical.
