What it is
pdf is the Skill in Anthropic's official skills repository for PDF files. It uses a different tool for each job: pypdf for merging, splitting and rotating pages; pdfplumber for extracting text and tables while keeping the layout, with tables ready to load into a data frame for analysis; reportlab for creating PDFs from scratch; and qpdf for batch work on the command line. Form filling, OCR on scanned pages, watermarks and encryption are covered too, with form details in a separate reference file.
Who it's for:people who need to pull data out of PDFs, organize files in bulk, or have AI produce PDF reports.
Before you start: written for Claude. It needs a Python environment. Like docx, it uses Anthropic's proprietary license: the source is viewable, but it is not open source.
