What it is
Open Design Skill is a community skill by sugarforever. The README calls it a "thin wrapper" around the Open Design project: it brings Open Design's curated catalogue into any agent that follows the SKILL.md convention, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI or OpenCode, without running Open Design's local daemon. The catalogue holds more than 150 brand DESIGN.md files, more than 110 rendering templates for decks, prototypes, dashboards, landing pages and posters, more than 130 design-related skills and 11 craft references on typography, colour, accessibility and animation. You ask the agent for "a pitch deck for my seed round" or "a landing page with a given brand's design system"; the skill checks that the Open Design content repo is cloned locally, walks you through picking one design system and one template, and records the choice in a .open-design.json file in your project, so later work follows the same setup. What sets it apart is the per-project binding to one design system, with no daemon required. The README also states what is left out: the in-browser preview, comment-mode edits and slider parameters stay in Open Design itself.
Who it's for:People who build pages, decks or dashboards with an AI agent and want the output to follow a consistent visual system. It runs from the command line, so it's a stretch if you don't code.
Before you start: Install an agent that supports the SKILL.md convention, then add the skill with npx skills add or clone it into your skills folder. On first use the Open Design content repo has to be cloned locally; the helper scripts are Node.js, so you need git and Node.js. Docs are in English. The brand specs in the catalogue belong to real companies, so judge for yourself whether applying one to your own product is appropriate. The skill's own code is free under the MIT license; the Open Design content repo has its own terms.
