What it is
Motion Design Skill is a motion design Skill that LottieFiles open-sourced on GitHub. The README says it teaches agents to think like motion directors, settling timing, easing, choreography and emotional intent before writing a single line of animation code. The main file is a quick reference: an 8-step checklist, four motion personalities (Playful, Premium, Corporate, Energetic), duration and easing tables by element type, and common recipes for button presses, card entrances, and success and error states. Further documents go deeper into Disney's 12 principles adapted for UI, emotion-to-motion mapping, multi-element choreography, accessibility and performance, plus a troubleshooting guide for animation that feels robotic, slow or cluttered. What sets it apart is that it isn't tied to any animation system, working with CSS, Framer Motion, GSAP, Lottie or springs, while its rules come down to concrete numbers, such as keeping no more than a third of three or more elements moving at once and the total stagger under 500ms. Once installed, it kicks in when you ask your agent for buttons, modals, page transitions or loading states, or ask it to review animation code.
Who it's for:designers and developers building web or app interfaces with an AI coding agent who want buttons, cards and transitions to move with more care. Readers who don't code won't get much from it.
Before you start: install with npx skills add LottieFiles/motion-design-skill; the README says it supports 40+ agents including Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and GitHub Copilot, and the installer needs internet access. The Skill is documentation only, with no scripts, accounts or API keys. It supplies design method, and your AI tool writes the animation code in your project; it doesn't generate video and doesn't include a license to any animation assets on the LottieFiles platform. The content is in English. The MIT license covers this repository's documents; your AI tool's own costs are separate.
