What it is
mcp-builder is a Skill in Anthropic's official skills repository. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard interface: when you write an MCP server for an external service, a language model can use the tools defined in it to work with that service, such as checking a calendar or reading a database. The Skill splits development into four phases: research the MCP specification and the target service's API and make a plan; set up the project, write authentication and error handling, and implement each tool; review the code and test it with MCP Inspector; and finally write a set of realistic, complex questions to check whether a model can actually get work done through the server. It recommends TypeScript and also supports Python with FastMCP, with streamable HTTP for remote servers and stdio for local ones.
Who it's for:developers who want to connect their own services or data to AI. If you don't write code, it won't be useful to you.
