What it is
canvas-design is an example Skill that Anthropic publishes in its official anthropics/skills repository. SKILL.md says it creates visual art as .png and .pdf files using a "design philosophy", for posters, art pieces, designs and other static work, and that the designs must be original, never copying existing artists' work, to avoid copyright violations. It works in two steps. First, Claude names an "art movement" in one or two words and writes a design philosophy of 4 to 6 paragraphs about space, color, scale, composition and visual hierarchy, saved as a .md file. Second, it expresses that philosophy on a canvas as a single-page PDF or PNG; the text asks for roughly 90% visual design and 10% essential text, with nothing falling off the page and nothing overlapping. The topic you give becomes a subtle reference hidden in the piece, which SKILL.md compares to a jazz musician quoting another song: those who know will catch it. The last step is refinement, and the text asks Claude to polish what is already there instead of adding new graphics. If you ask for more pages, it makes pages that follow the same philosophy while each one differs, bundled into one PDF or several PNGs. What sets it apart is the order of work: the philosophy is written before anything is drawn, and you receive the philosophy .md alongside the finished piece, so the thinking behind the image is on the page.
Who it's for:people who want a poster, a cover or an art-style static visual and would like to see the design thinking behind it.
Before you start: the README's install route is to add the anthropics/skills plugin marketplace in Claude Code and install the example-skills plugin (12 example Skills at once), and it says these example Skills are already available on Claude.ai paid plans. Claude needs an environment where it can run code and write files. The output is a PNG or PDF, with no layered design file to edit. SKILL.md tells Claude to pick fonts from the Skill's own canvas-fonts folder, and also says to "download and use whatever fonts are needed". The licensing of the bundled fonts is not uniform: most come with the text of the SIL Open Font License (OFL), but some font families have no matching license file. We suggest using only fonts you have confirmed you are licensed to use, and we don't recommend letting the AI download fonts freely. The README says the Skills in this repository are for demonstration and educational purposes and that what you get in Claude may differ from what the repository shows, so test before relying on them for important work. The Skill's instructions are licensed Apache-2.0, which does not cover the bundled fonts, your own images or any brand marks.
