What it is
Avoid AI Writing is an open-source writing Skill by Conor Bronsdon that finds and removes AI writing patterns in English. It has three modes. Rewrite, the default, flags problems, applies up to two editing passes and returns one final version. Detect only flags patterns and separates real problems from judgment calls. Edit makes minimal, targeted changes to a prose file in place, keeps passages that already read as human, and refuses to touch code or config. You can also pick a voice profile: casual, professional, technical, warm or blunt. The repository includes a local Node detector that scores a file or piped text, with no network calls and no account. What sets it apart is that you can audit without rewriting, and it tells clear problems apart from the ones that need your judgment.
Who it's for:people writing English blog posts, LinkedIn posts, technical explainers and business copy who want the AI tone gone and the meaning kept.
Before you start: install the complete Skill folder, since the core rules rely on a separate references file and SKILL.md alone isn't enough. You can use npx skills add, the Claude plugin, or copy it by hand. The detector needs Node 18 or later and installs through npm. Optional GitHub Action and pre-commit setups are included; they only run on commits if you configure them yourself. Rules and detector are calibrated for English, and a score reflects writing habits only. It can't prove whether a text was written by AI. MIT license.
