Builds websites the way a director makes a film: art direction locked first, then assets and build, then script checks for template habits and dropped frames.

What it is

auteur is a website design Skill open-sourced by GitHub user agiwhitelist; the README calls it the skill that directs a website like a film. It has three modes: build for an excellent conventional page, direct for a cinematic site where scrolling drives the scenes, and system for multi-screen products such as apps, dashboards, settings and onboarding, built as one design system. Before any code, it has the agent fill in a commit-sheet that locks one brand hue, a type pairing, a motion budget and the category clichés to avoid, plus a target number for background lightness that can be measured afterward. For assets it can call command-line tools you already have to generate images, video frames and depth maps, use Blender for 3D, or download clearly licensed material such as CC0 assets from Poly Haven, logging the license of every file. What sets it apart is a set of script gates before anything ships: slopscan fails the build on specific AI-template habits such as purple-to-blue gradients, transition: all and defaulting to the Inter font; motionqa drives the page in Playwright on a throttled CPU and fails it on dropped frames, long tasks, autoplaying sound or console errors; and in system mode, systemscan checks every route for components drifting off-style. The README links ten live demo sites made with it.

Who it's for:people using an AI coding agent to make brand pages, portfolios, launch pages or multi-screen product prototypes who want to avoid the templated look. You'll need an AI coding tool that runs commands; readers who don't code won't get much from it.

Before you start: install with npx skills add agiwhitelist/auteur, or add it to Claude Code as a plugin from its marketplace. The README's requirements list Claude Code, while its install section also names Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and others. The check scripts need Node.js 18 or later, and the screenshot and motion checks need Playwright's Chromium. Only two phases go online: reference scouting reads award-winning sites such as Awwwards and pulls Bing, Pinterest and are.na image results into a moodboard, and sourcing downloads assets from Poly Haven, Iconify, Google Fonts, Openverse and Coverr. The README says you can skip both phases entirely and everything else runs offline, using only material you have the rights to. Reference screenshots and moodboard images are for reference only and shouldn't go into published work; CC-BY images from Openverse need a credit, and the script writes the credit line into its license ledger. The README says no API keys or logins are needed, but if it calls Codex, Gemini or Grok command-line tools to generate assets, those run on your own accounts and credits with those services, at their prices. The license is MIT.
