About the film
Li Changsheng Back in the Eighties is a period drama on Hongguo, a Chinese short-drama platform, told in an original series and a sequel, 198 episodes in all. The official synopsis for the original says Li Changsheng is reborn in the 1980s and swears to protect his wife and daughter this time. Drawing on years of hunting in the mountains, he hunts wild boar, searches for wild ginseng and takes on poachers to hold the family together, until an ancient tomb and hidden treasure come to light and foreign mercenaries set their sights on his village. The sequel picks up from there: the brother of a dead rival returns to the village posing as a patriotic overseas Chinese investor, funding a road while secretly going after the tomb. Li Changsheng leads the villagers into the mountains, turns wild boar and wolves against the mercenaries, and has to get through a sinkhole, poisonous miasma and a long-haired zombie. The first part is about getting by as a hunter; later it turns into a treasure-hunting adventure with a touch of horror. Hongguo ranks the original on its AI drama chart. The sequel's page doesn't say whether AI was used, and Hongguo doesn't call it Season 2. The table on this page shows the status of each part. Hongguo doesn't say which AI tools were used or who produced it. The platform gives no English title, so the one here is our translation.
Who it's for:viewers who like period family stories, wilderness adventure and treasure hunts.
Before you watch: watch the original first, then the sequel. The sequel has 30 episodes so far, and the page doesn't say whether it has finished. Hongguo's website asks you to log in before playing, or you can use the Hongguo app. The app's promo says every episode is free, but the page doesn't explain how. The story includes hunting and gunfights, and the sequel adds zombies and poisonous miasma; we haven't watched it, so we can't say how intense it gets. The pages don't list the dialogue language, subtitles or episode length.
