What it is
TECHNICAL DEBT is a simulation game designed by OblongOolong and published by the itch.io account Cult Of Communication, played in the browser. It opens with a layoff notice in your inbox, and from there you manage cash, credit, shopping and family relationships for a household that has lost its income, along with fictional vacation points. The buying and credit applications are part of the satire and never charge you anything. The whole game takes place on the desktop of an old home computer. The author says the project was built with extensive AI assistance: OpenAI Codex for design analysis, programming, testing, balance simulation and draft content, OpenAI image generation for pictures, Suno Pro for music and ElevenLabs for audio.
Who it's for: Players who enjoy management sims and don't mind heavy, real-life themes.
Before you start: It's free; click Run game in the browser and play, no login needed. The author says you can use a mouse or touch, but says nothing about how it plays on phones, and the game window is fairly wide. The game is in English. The author warns that it includes fictional financial hardship, family conflict, not having enough food, bereavement and predatory advertising.
