What it is
Shadows & Dragons is a solo fantasy RPG on itch.io from S&D, in the old-school tabletop style: fragile heroes, real danger, rulings over rules, and no hand-holding. An AI acts as the Game Master (GM), describing the world, playing the people and monsters, rolling dice and ruling on your plans; you tell it in text what your party does. The page is clear about the split: character sheets, gear, HP, dice, time, travel and the map are tracked and saved by the game's code, so the AI can't quietly hand you a magic sword or forget you're out of rations. Each game generates a region with factions, towns, a hex map and dungeons, across wilderness, city and dungeon modes, and the world remembers what you've done. The rules are a light 2d6 system, with the full rules as a PDF on the official site. That split is the heart of it: the AI tells the story, and the code keeps the books.
Who it's for: anyone who loves old-school tabletop play and wants a solo text adventure on their computer.
Before you start: open it in a browser with no install; the page says it's best on a laptop or desktop. It's marked In development, the AI GM can take 20 to 60 seconds to answer, and your world ID is your save, so keep it. The official site says there are no accounts, ads, analytics or cookies; what you type is stored on their servers and sent to OpenAI, so don't enter personal information, and unused or long-inactive worlds are deleted under the site's rules. It's free to play: the team covers a shared monthly AI budget for everyone, and when it runs out you can wait for next month or add your own OpenAI API key and pay OpenAI directly. The interface is in English; the game has dungeons, combat and death, with no formal age rating. The site says it's an independent, unofficial project, with sources for its rules and art on the Credits page, and no license for reusing the work is given.
