What it is
Ikuta '73 is a lawn-mowing sim that Stuart Weiss of Plinth Cybernetics made for AI Browser Game Jam 4. It's the summer of 1973, and you're a college student mowing lawns for your uncle's company in the hills west of Tokyo. The page calls it "A game about doing a job well, even when you don't have to." The jam theme was CHARGE, and the author turned it into a human battery: the sun drains your stamina, the shade recharges it, and if you do a good job, someone may offer you something cold to drink. There's a day cycle with a moving sun. The author says it was inspired by Haruki Murakami's short story "The Last Lawn of the Afternoon" and draws on a few Japanese games. The author wrote the game's text and says in the comments that no AI was used for it. Code, sound effects, modeling, and level QA went to Claude Code (Opus 5), and the title screen and lens flare code to Grok Build (4.5).
Who it's for: Players who like slow, everyday sims and the feeling of a 1970s Japanese summer.
Before you start: It runs in the browser, including on phones and tablets, with nothing to download. On a phone there are no on-screen buttons: drag the left half to walk and the right half to look. Windows and Linux downloads are also available, with gamepad support. If it runs slowly, lower the grass density in Settings. English only. The house models and cicada sounds are third-party assets credited on the game page. itch.io lists it among its free games; check the game page for current terms. No license is given for the game.
