What it is
Google Playground is an experimental game platform from Google Labs. In the official words, you can "create custom games in minutes using simple text prompts": describe the game you want, and the platform uses generative AI to build a playable version that you can keep refining and share. There's a catalog where you can play games other users have published, along with leaderboards. Games you make stay private by default until you choose to publish them. No model is named.
Who it's for: People who'd like to make a small game without writing code, and players curious about how far AI-generated games can go.
Before you start: It's currently open only to users 18 and over in the United States; check the official site for availability in Canada and elsewhere. You'll need to sign in with a Google account, and it runs in modern browsers on computers and phones, with an English interface. Playing games in the catalog is free; creating has a weekly allowance, free creation access is rolling out in stages, and a Google One AI plan raises your allowance, with pricing on the official site. The terms say Google doesn't claim ownership of the games you make but prohibit using others' characters and brands without permission, and with your consent ads can appear in your games. Your prompts, any reference images you upload and your game activity are processed by Google under its privacy policy. Games can be removed or made private, and share links may stop working.
