What it is
Barotrauma AI NPCs is a mod by RubbingMyAxe for the submarine survival game Barotrauma, and it won the overall grand prize at the 4th Player2 AI NPC Jam. Once installed, crew NPCs reply using the conversation so far, their own health, their inventory and the state of the submarine, and they can act on tasks you describe in plain language. The author also added speech-to-text, text-to-speech and vision input, so you can give orders by voice. You choose the AI model yourself: any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, Player2, OpenRouter, or a model running locally in LM Studio.
Who it's for: Barotrauma players who want an NPC crew that actually understands what they say.
Before you start: This is a mod, so you need Barotrauma itself (pricing as listed on Steam), then AI NPCs and LuaCsForBarotrauma from the Steam Workshop, with C# scripting turned on, which runs script code on your computer. Cloud models need an endpoint or API key, and your chat, the game state and, with voice and vision on, audio and images go to the provider you pick; Player2's free route needs its desktop client and an account, and OpenRouter needs an account and key, with costs billed separately. The author says they aren't responsible for third-party pricing or data handling. No public source code or license for the mod was found. The game includes guns and combat.
