What it is
Alien Orbital Assault is a browser vertical shoot-'em-up by Fifth Layer Studio (itch.io account kc00l), which the author says is built around a single, brutal boss fight, so the whole run is spent working on one boss. The boss can't be hurt while its drone escort surrounds it. Shoot down every escort and a brief vulnerability window opens. Miss it and the drones come back, more of them and tougher. Destroying alien ships doesn't earn points; the energy you reclaim serves as both ammo and fuel. You get five lives and no continues. The author's AI disclosure on the game page lists code, graphics, sounds, and text, without naming a model.
Who it's for: Players who like hard shooters and don't mind taking on the same boss again and again.
Before you start: It runs in the browser. The game page lists keyboard, mouse, Xbox controller, and touchscreen, with configurable controls; we haven't tested it on a phone. The page lists it as free; check the game page for current terms. English only. The page doesn't say whether scores are uploaded. The author states the code is under the MIT License and the assets under CC0 1.0. We didn't find a source repository and haven't checked a license file separately. The art is pixel-style sci-fi mech combat, and the boss has a grotesque brain-and-giant-eye design.
