What it is
YouTube Digest is an open-source Chrome extension by GitHub user zarazhangrui. It puts a YouTube video's transcript, bilingual translation, AI overview, explanations and timestamped notes into one side panel. The transcript can be shown in the original, in Simplified Chinese, or in an aligned bilingual view, and the AI overview includes chapters and key quotes, and you can ask it to explain selected text. It is a bring-your-own-key project that you install locally from GitHub. It is not in the Chrome Web Store, includes no API credits and runs no developer-operated server. The README says it has no analytics or telemetry, and settings are kept in local Chrome storage.
Highlights:
- Transcript, bilingual translation, AI overview and notes in one Chrome side panel
- Click a timestamp to jump to that point in the video
- Select transcript text to get an explanation or save it as a timestamped note
- The README says there is no analytics or telemetry
How to use:
- First, download the project into a permanent folder, then in Chrome use Load unpacked to pick that folder; the README also gives a prompt you can hand to a coding agent.
- Then follow the README to create Supadata and DeepSeek accounts and enter your own keys.
- Finally, open a YouTube video and use the side panel for the transcript, overview and notes.
Who it's for:
People who learn content or languages from YouTube and want transcripts and notes.
Before you start:
- You need Chrome and your own Supadata and DeepSeek keys, and those services' charges apply.
- Video captions are fetched through Supadata and handed to DeepSeek to make overviews, explanations and translations.
- It is loaded locally as an extension and is not in the Chrome Web Store.
- License: MIT.
