What it is
Touch Grass, Babu is an Android app Ayesha Mashiat built for Week 1 of the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge. As the author describes it, after about 15 minutes on social feeds or games, a deadpan but caring AI "Mom" covers the screen and locks the app until you have been away from the phone for 45 minutes and walked 1,000 steps. In a hurry, you can show her a photo of outdoor scenery, which an on-device vision model checks along with the light sensor; at night she keeps the app locked until morning. Mom's lines come from Qwen3.5-4B, an open-weight model the author fine-tuned with Tinker using a larger Qwen model as teacher, running offline on the phone through llama.cpp. The author writes that she used Claude Code as a guide and learned Android development along the way. What sets it apart is that the app has no internet permission, so the roasting and the checks all happen on the phone. The web demo only serves sample lines from Mom; it doesn't run the on-device model.
Who it's for:Android users who want help scrolling less, don't mind being bossed around by a sharp-tongued AI, and are comfortable installing an APK.
Before you start: Android only, Android 11 or later on arm64, with about 6GB of RAM recommended. You download the APK from GitHub and install it yourself, which means allowing installs from outside the store. For the full experience you also push a roughly 2.8GB model file to the phone with adb; without it, Mom uses built-in fixed lines. The app uses Usage Access (to see which app is open), a screen overlay, the camera, the step counter and the light sensor, and keeps running in the background; the author says it has no internet permission, which we haven't verified. The APK link in the article points to a differently named repo, so confirm the source before downloading. The repo states no license and has very few commits, so it is an early personal project. The model scores the author reports are her own preliminary results.
