What it is
TextFold is a reading tool open-sourced by GitHub user chenxiachan, formerly called PaperFold. It splits a text into layers: the full text, a summary built only from original sentences, AI-written key points, a one-line gist and then a topic map, and you can unfold or collapse each layer. The README says you can select a passage or the whole text and ask AI about it; the answer gives a short reply first, then the evidence, with each point citing the paragraph it rests on, one click away. Unlike a typical AI summary, the first two layers use only the author's own sentences, and everything AI writes higher up is marked and traced back to the source. It reads documents and links in several formats, connects to Zotero, Obsidian, Claude Code and Pi, and has Chinese and English interfaces.
Who it's for:people who read a lot of papers and long articles and want the gist before the detail.
Before you start: there's no TextFold account; the AI part uses services you already have, such as a ChatGPT plan, OpenRouter authorization, your own API key, or Ollama running locally. The files you import, the passages you select and your questions go to the model you configure, and costs depend on that service. Reading from Zotero requires you to turn on its setting that allows local applications to communicate; the README says this path doesn't go through Zotero's servers or change your library. The folding add-ons for Claude Code and Pi change how those agents display their output. The code is under the Apache-2.0 licence.
