What it is

Strata is a local large-model app developed by GitHub user Niko1221 and other contributors, for Windows, Linux and macOS. The README says it runs the Qwen3.8-Flash-Next model, and you can pick other models during setup. Once installed, you can chat, write code and read images on your own computer, and it includes an optional coding agent. It can also serve OpenAI- and Anthropic-compatible endpoints; point Claude Code or Codex at them and they use the model on your machine. By default it runs only on your computer (127.0.0.1), has no usage telemetry, and keeps chats locally.

Who it's for:Developers with plenty of memory and a capable GPU who want to run models on their own machine rather than send code and conversations to the cloud. Readers who don't write code won't get much from it.

Before you start: You need roughly 32 GB of RAM plus VRAM combined, and model downloads of about 40 to 70 GB, more for larger models. There are three ways to install: a desktop installer, a one-line terminal command, or from source. The one-line command downloads and runs a remote install script; we don't recommend that, so read the script before installing. The Windows installer isn't code-signed. The coding agent defaults to Manual mode, which asks before writing files, running commands or calling outside tools, and we suggest keeping it that way; note that it can read files beyond the project folder. Bypass mode removes all permission checks, and we don't recommend it. If you switch to an outside API model, the full conversation goes to the provider you choose; web search sends search terms to services such as DuckDuckGo and Bing; and the optional Cloudflare tunnel exposes the service to the internet, which we don't recommend turning on. Keys for outside services are stored in a permission-restricted local file without encryption. Strata's code is MIT-licensed; each model has its own licence, for example the Qwen Community License 1.0 for Qwen3.8.
