What it is
SoundCraft is an open-source digital audio workstation (DAW) from the GitHub organization storytold. It handles multitrack recording, editing and mixing, with MIDI, effects and audio export. The AI part comes from outside agents. The README opens with "Give Claude a DAW." Over MCP, JSON or the command line, an agent can set levels, add effects, inspect the session and export audio. The app itself does not generate music or voices. The whole workstation's controls are open to an agent. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, and you can build a web version.
Who it's for:Audio, podcast and music creators, and anyone who wants an AI agent to help mix, tidy sessions and export.
Before you start: Download a release installer or build from source with Rust 1.95 or newer; Linux builds also need ALSA headers. Recording needs your system's microphone or audio-input permission. Audio, sessions and exports stay on your computer. Once connected, an agent can read your session, and if that agent uses a cloud model, the content goes to the model provider. Loading third-party CLAP, VST3 or Audio Units plugins means running someone else's code on your computer, so don't install plugins from unknown sources. In headless MCP mode you can limit which folders the agent may read and write; without that setting there is no such limit. The source is free; third-party plugins and outside agents cost extra. The project is at an early pre-alpha stage, and the interface is English only for now; the README says translations are not done yet. Licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, your choice.
