What it is
SkillMD is an open-source toolchain from the skillmd.com team for managing Agent Skills (SKILL.md files). From the command line you can search for a Skill, check its scan results and source, and install it into your coding agent's own folder; the makers say it supports Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and more than 60 others. You can also lint and score your own Skill, or publish it to the SkillMD registry. The same tools are available to your agent through MCP, and there is a GitHub Action. The makers say none of this needs an account. Its focus is checking before anything is installed: the scan shows which scripts a Skill carries, whether it makes network calls and whether it reads secrets, and the makers say installing lints first and never runs the Skill's scripts.
Who it's for:Developers who use coding agents and install a lot of Skills. Readers who don't write code won't get much from it.
Before you start: You need Node.js, it runs in the command line, and the documentation is in English. Publishing sends the full text of the Skill you choose to the SkillMD registry. Updating an installed Skill replaces its files. The toolchain is MIT-licensed; third-party Skills in the registry keep their own licenses. Whether the registry has paid tiers isn't stated.
