What it is
Skill Recorder is a desktop tool Microsoft published on GitHub. You do a task once as usual, and it records your screen, window switches, browser URLs, short clipboard previews and, if you want, your voice from the microphone.
When you click Analyze, it sends the timeline, screenshots, transcript and selected terminal excerpts to GitHub Copilot, which turns them into a SKILL.md file or a scheduled Automation.
It starts from a demonstration: instead of writing instructions first, you record the real steps and get something an AI agent can follow. Terminal recording covers only sessions the app itself starts, not your whole system.
Who it's for:people who repeat the same computer routine and want an AI assistant to take it over.
Before you start: Windows 11 and macOS are the main platforms; there are install steps for Ubuntu, but how well it works there isn't stated. You need a GitHub account with Copilot access, and Copilot is billed separately; whether the tool itself costs anything isn't stated. Installation means copying a PowerShell or terminal command from the releases page, which downloads and starts the program. Analyze uploads screenshots, window URLs, clipboard previews, transcripts and terminal excerpts to GitHub's cloud, so close anything you don't want captured before recording. Generated automations can run on a schedule. The code is MIT licensed. The interface is in English.
