What it is
Scrimshaw Jukebox is a small web tool by developer Simon Willison. He writes on his blog that he wanted to see whether Claude Opus 5.5 could compose music, so he had it design a plain-text format for writing scores, build a page that plays that format, and write some example tracks. The result holds six original adventure-game-style pieces, such as Moonlit Harbor, The Ghost Galleon and Lantern Waltz. Pick one and a synthesizer in your browser plays it live, with the score scrolling alongside, and you can open the score to edit it yourself. The author calls the results "surprisingly good" and says the AI leaned into the pirate-adventure flavor harder than he'd intended.
Who it's for:Anyone curious whether AI can write music, and fans of retro game soundtracks.
Before you start: Just open the page; there's nothing to install, no sign-up and no API key, and the sound is synthesized in your browser, so turn your volume up. Edited scores are saved in your own browser. It's one page in Simon Willison's public tools collection, whose code is released under Apache-2.0. We only confirmed that playback works and haven't judged the sound quality.
