What it is
PortOS is an open-source project by GitHub user atomantic, who calls it a self-hosted operating system for dev machines: one dashboard to manage apps, orchestrate AI agents and capture knowledge, reachable from anywhere over a Tailscale private network. It includes app management with PM2 process monitoring, live logs and crash detection; an AI agent orchestrator called Chief of Staff that dispatches work to models such as Claude, OpenAI or local Ollama; writing and storytelling tools; a "second brain" knowledge system with semantic search; and a terminal plus GitHub and JIRA integrations. The author is clear that it is highly personal, built for a single developer running it on their own machine behind Tailscale, and that breaking changes can happen at any time.
Who it's for:developers already working with AI coding agents who want to turn their own computer into a personal workbench.
Before you start: it needs Node.js 22.12 or later, Git and PostgreSQL. Authentication is off by default and the Tailscale network is the trust boundary, and the author warns against exposing its ports to the public internet. Licensed under MIT.
