What it is
PhotoCraft is an image editor published by the GitHub organization storytold and credited to the ArtCraft Team and the repository's contributors. It edits images in layers, with selections, masks, text, vector shapes, adjustments, filters and export, and the authors describe it as a clean-room reimplementation of a familiar professional editing workflow. What sets it apart is a line from the README: "anything you can click, a script or an AI agent can do too." AI agents operate PhotoCraft through the command line, JSON or MCP, with the model supplied by your own agent; the README lists built-in generative AI features as still missing. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD.
Who it's for:People who create images or edit photos, and anyone who wants an AI agent to edit images in batches.
Before you start: Download a release package from GitHub, or build the desktop app and command-line tool from source with Rust and Cargo. The project calls itself early alpha, so don't treat it as a mature replacement for professional editing software. Images are read and written locally. When you connect an AI agent, the agent receives documents and rendered results, and if it uses a cloud model, that content leaves your computer. With automation turned on, an agent can read and write files, change preferences and run editing commands, so give it access only to the folders it needs. The web version has to be built and hosted yourself; there is no ready-made online version. The source is free and licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, your choice; trademarks, fonts and assets have their own licenses.
