What it is
OpenWorker is an open-source desktop AI coworker published by Andrew Ng (GitHub: andrewyng); the README says it was split out of his aisuite project. Its one-line pitch is "AI that gets your everyday tasks done." It can read and write local files, run terminal commands, and reach outside tools through more than 25 connectors, for example replying in Slack or handling calendar and email. It can also run tasks on a schedule. The first release leads with defensive Security coworkers that scan code and dependencies for vulnerabilities. You can bring your own model API key or subscription, or run models locally with Ollama. There are installers for macOS and Windows, and a web interface you can start from source.
Who it's for:People who want AI to take over everyday computer work and are willing to spend time managing its permissions.
Before you start: The desktop app is in beta. It supports macOS 12 or later on Apple Silicon, and 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. Its permissions are broad. It can read and write local files and run terminal commands. It can connect to email, calendar and Slack and send on your behalf, and it can run on a schedule. The author says conversations, connector tokens and model keys are kept in a local secret store, while OAuth sign-in goes through a small cloud relay. The model you choose and the tools you connect will receive the relevant data. The project documents approvals, audit logs and an optional sandbox; before turning on automatic runs, check what each connector can do. The app itself is free and open source and works without an account; model and third-party service costs are yours. Licensed under MIT.
