What it is
OpenShorts is an open-source AI video platform by GitHub user mutonby. Give it a long video and it picks out moments, cuts them into vertical shorts and adds captions and titles. You can self-host it with Docker, or use the author's hosted version, API or MCP interface. Models can be swapped for local ones such as Ollama; the default external model and speech services need your own accounts and API keys. What sets it apart is that the core is open source, so people who want their footage to stay on their own machine can run it themselves.
Who it's for:creators who make long videos and want extra shorts from them, and people comfortable setting up their own tools.
Before you start: self-hosting needs Docker, and the first run downloads models and assets. With external models or the hosted version, your original video may be uploaded to their servers and the AI provider can see the content. The repo includes a social-account connection that can post or schedule posts to Instagram and YouTube; we don't recommend it, and suggest using the tool only to cut and export, checking everything yourself before it goes out. The hosted version has free and paid plans; check the official site. The core is MIT-licensed, while the cloud service has a separate commercial license outside MIT.
