What it is
OpenMontage is an open-source video production system from GitHub user calesthio. It has no orchestrator of its own; in the README's words, "Your AI coding assistant IS the orchestrator." The assistant you already use (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf and others) works through each stage in order: research, proposal, script, scene plan, assets, edit and compose. The README lists more than ten pipelines, including animated explainers, cinematic trailers, documentary montages, podcast repurposing, localization and dubbing, and avatar spokesperson videos. It pauses for your approval at the proposal, script, scene plan and asset stages, and logs which model provider it picked and what each step cost. The documentary montage pipeline can build a video entirely from free real footage on Pexels, Wikimedia Commons, NASA and similar archives, with no paid generation, which is what sets it furthest apart from most AI video tools.
Who it's for:Creators and small teams who already work with an AI coding assistant and want to build their own video production line.
Before you start: You install Python 3.10+, FFmpeg and Node.js 18+ yourself (some features need Node.js 22), and you need an AI coding assistant that can read and write files and run commands; local video generation needs a GPU. The setup script downloads a number of packages from the internet. Cloud image, video and voice services need your own API keys and are billed by each provider; your prompts, reference images and audio or video go to whichever provider you choose. The repository includes avatar, lip-sync and face-swap features, so only use likenesses and footage you have the rights to. OpenMontage Studio on the official site is currently a waitlist; this entry covers the open-source repository. It is licensed under AGPL-3.0, and third-party models and footage carry their own licenses.
