OpenCode

OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent from the anomalyco team on GitHub; the README opens with "The open source AI coding agent." You start it in your terminal and have it understand your project, edit code and run commands, and there's also a desktop app, currently in beta, for macOS, Windows and Linux. It has two built-in agents you switch between with Tab: build, the default full-access agent for doing the work, and plan, a read-only agent that denies file edits by default and asks before running bash commands, which suits exploring an unfamiliar codebase. A general sub-agent handles complex searches and multistep tasks. What sets it apart is that it's open source and gives you both a hands-on mode and a look-but-don't-touch mode, so you can plan before you change anything.

Who it's for:developers who want an open-source coding agent and their own choice of model. Readers who don't write code won't have a use for it.

Before you start: you can install it with npm, Homebrew, the Arch repositories, mise or Nix, and the desktop app downloads from the official site. The README also lists a command, labeled YOLO, that downloads an install script with curl and pipes it straight to bash; that runs a remote script directly on your computer, so we don't recommend it. Use a package manager instead. The build agent has full access by default and can edit files and run commands, so commit or back up first. Your code and prompts go to whichever model service you configure, and costs depend on that provider. MIT licence.
