What it is
OpenClaw was started by Peter Steinberger and the community and is now looked after by the OpenClaw Foundation. The README describes it as "an open-source AI assistant that runs on your own computer." It runs a Gateway on your machine, and you can message it through chat apps such as Discord, Telegram and WhatsApp, or use the web Control UI or the CLI. It can run terminal commands, drive a browser, send messages as you, schedule recurring jobs, and connect to paired devices such as phones to use their camera and screen. Its state stays on your own hardware, and it works with cloud models or local ones. It runs on macOS, iOS, Android, Windows and Linux.
Who it's for:experienced users who want an AI assistant that actually does things, keeps its data on their own devices, and who know how to manage permissions carefully.
Before you start: the official installer on macOS and Linux downloads a script with curl and runs it immediately; we don't recommend that and suggest installing with npm instead, then running openclaw onboard --install-daemon to finish setup. There is no paid tier, but the models and chat channels you connect may cost money. Unless you configure a sandbox, commands run directly on your computer by default. This project may control your computer, phone, or many account permissions. AI Inspiration World has not tested it and does not recommend it. Licensed under MIT. Based on the project's public documentation. Not tested by AI Inspiration World.
