What it is
OpenAI CLI is OpenAI's official command-line tool for calling the OpenAI REST API from the terminal. The README says you can generate images, upload files, submit batches and inspect API results without writing an application, and you can also use it in scripts. What sets it apart is that it turns common API operations into single commands, which suits people who want to try an endpoint quickly or process things in bulk with a script. It is separate from OpenAI's Codex CLI: Codex CLI is a coding agent that reads and writes code, while this tool only sends API requests.
Who it's for:Developers already using the OpenAI API who want to call it directly from the terminal or scripts. If you don't write code, you won't need it.
Before you start: It runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. You can download a prebuilt binary, install it with Homebrew, or build it with Go 1.26 or later. Calling the API needs an OpenAI API account and your own API key; a ChatGPT subscription does not count as API credit. The tool is free, and API calls are billed by the model and endpoint you use, so check the official pricing page. Prompts, images, audio and files you submit are sent to OpenAI and kept according to OpenAI's API data policy; if you change the base URL, they go to the server you set instead. Debug output includes request bodies and can expose confidential content. When handling untrusted input, set OPENAI_UNTRUSTED_STDIN=1 as the docs describe. Commands can also create and delete resources on the API, so read a script before you run it. The code is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence.
