OmniDiff

OmniDiff is a local diff viewer by Marko Ivankovic (GitHub ivankovic). Give it two files and it compares them based on what they are: text changes for code, and dedicated views for images, PDFs, fonts and archives. You can read the result as text in the terminal, export it as JSON, or open an interactive viewer. The author also offers companion plugins for VS Code and Neovim. The README says the project is built with substantial AI help, currently Claude Code, and most commits say so; nothing calls an AI model at runtime.

Who it's for:Developers who often compare different versions of all kinds of files. Readers who don't write code won't get much from it.

Before you start: Install with cargo install --locked omnidiff, which needs Rust 1.92 or later and a C compiler. There are also prebuilt binaries for Linux, macOS and Windows, plus Homebrew, apt and Nix packages. Docs and interface are in English. It reads the two files you point it at, and the README describes the viewer as read-only. If you choose to run git configure or jj configure, it walks you through prompts in the terminal and then writes to your global or current-repo Git or JJ settings. The license is AGPL-3.0: commercial use is fine, but if you distribute a modified version or offer it as a network service, AGPL's source-sharing terms apply. The author also sells an organization license, limited to unmodified internal use.
