What it is
Writing Buddy is an Obsidian plugin by xtenlab. Select a passage while you write and ask the AI to rewrite, polish, tighten, expand, or continue it. It can also check scene pacing and story consistency, so you don't have to copy text back and forth between your draft and a chat window. The documentation notes that your manuscript only changes after you choose Apply. It connects to more than a dozen model providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, and Ollama, as well as custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints.
Who it's for:writers who draft long articles, fiction, or book-length work in Obsidian. No coding needed.
Before you start: install Obsidian, then find Writing Buddy under Settings, Community plugins, Browse. The documentation says the plugin itself is free and open source. Hosted model providers need your own account and API key and bill you directly; you can also connect a model running locally through Ollama. The plugin is MIT-licensed, except the bundled memory module under vendor/recanta, which is all rights reserved.
