What it is
LightCraft is a photo library and RAW developer published by the GitHub organization storytold and credited to the ArtCraft Team and the repository's contributors. You import a photo library, rate and cull, adjust with local masks without touching the originals (non-destructive editing), and export. AI shows up in two places. One is optional models inside the app: the docs say "Object and Describe masks use SAM 3," so masks can be made from objects or text descriptions, and there is also AI denoising for RAW files. The other is outside AI agents, which can operate LightCraft through MCP or JSON. The README says it needs no account, no cloud, no telemetry and no subscription. It runs on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, with 18 interface languages including Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
Who it's for:Photographers who manage large libraries and edit RAW files, and anyone who wants an AI agent to help cull and color-correct.
Before you start: Download a release package or build from source with Rust 1.95 or later. The project is still in alpha. The SAM 3 model is about 3.4 GB, is not bundled, and has to be installed separately under its own license. Denoising weights are not built in either, and one optional set is GPL-3.0. The authors' docs state that the local control port has no authentication and should only be opened when needed. The optional remote SAM worker also has no separate authentication and relies on an SSH tunnel you set up yourself; remote segmentation sends photos and prompts to another Mac. The app itself is free and licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0, your choice. Models, outside agents and hardware cost extra.
