What it is
Hob is a desktop AI assistant from Frigade for Mac (Apple silicon), Windows and Linux. After you install it, it picks an open-weight model that fits your computer's hardware, then downloads and sets it up for you. You can hand it files from a project and have it read spreadsheets, chart data, fill out and work through PDFs, or write code. These tools run on your machine and ask for permission before they act. The makers say it is free, private and works offline, with no account, subscription or usage limits. Choosing a model is the step it takes off your hands. The interface comes in 32 languages and follows your system setting by default.
Who it's for:People who want AI help with their files on their own computer, without sending them to a cloud service.
Before you start: The model is downloaded to your machine, takes up several GB and needs a reasonably capable computer. Web search, email, calendar and plugin connections go online and send the relevant data to those services. Hob stores its own sign-in credentials and plugin secrets, encrypted, in the system keychain. The official installers download updates in the background and install them when you quit the app. There is no mobile app. The software is MIT-licensed; models and plugins have their own licenses.
