What it is
GrassWhisperer is a small open-source project Pawan Shivaji ghule published on DEV as a Week 1 entry in the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge. It is a web app that runs on your own computer with four tools: describe a bird to get an identification, its call and field tips; enter a city and growing zone for a weekly planting calendar; enter a place and the time you have for seasonal trail picks and a gear list; and an open outdoor Q&A. Under the hood, Ollama runs Meta's open-weight llama3.2:1b model locally, and the author says that once the model is downloaded it needs no internet, no account and no per-call API fees. The author devotes a section to explaining that the project was built together with the AI coding agent Antigravity IDE, which worked on the Express and Ollama integration, the prompts, the front end and the setup script. What sets it apart is that the AI lives on your machine; working without signal is the whole pitch.
Who it's for:people who like birding, gardening or hiking and don't mind installing open-source tools themselves. Readers unfamiliar with the command line will find setup a hurdle.
Before you start: install Ollama and Node.js, download the model (about 700MB), clone the repo, run npm install and npm start, then open the local address in your browser; it is not a website you can just visit. The README lists an MIT license, and the repo has only four commits, so it is an early personal project; the repo summary says 2024 while the article and README say 2026. The accuracy of its bird IDs, planting advice and outdoor tips hasn't been checked, so don't rely on it alone for foraging, plant identification or outdoor safety.
