What it is
Let an AI agent work with your files, notes and work tools from one graphical app. Craft Agents is an open-source desktop app from Craft Docs, the company behind the Craft documents app, and the README says the team builds it with Craft Agents only, no code editors. It connects to local files, Obsidian vaults, Git repos, MCP servers and REST APIs, and it can run prompts automatically on events or on a schedule. For models, the README lists Anthropic, Google AI Studio, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot and OpenAI, plus custom endpoints such as OpenRouter and Ollama; the Claude side runs on the Claude Agent SDK and the rest on the Pi SDK. There are three permission modes: Explore is read-only, Ask to Edit asks before each action (the default), and Auto approves every command on its own. Besides the desktop app, it can run headless on a remote server or be driven from a command line.
Who it's for:people already using models like Claude or ChatGPT who want an AI agent to work directly with their files, notes and work tools, and who are comfortable deciding how much access to give it.
Before you start: it installs on macOS, Windows and Linux. The README's one-line installers (curl … | bash on macOS and Linux, irm … | iex on Windows) download and run a remote script directly, and we don't recommend installing that way; the README also explains how to build from source (Bun required). Auto mode approves every command automatically, and we don't recommend it; start with Explore or Ask to Edit. With a cloud model, whatever you hand the agent goes to that model provider. The app is open source and free, while models and outside services are billed by each provider; cloud models need an account or API key, and you can also connect a local model such as Ollama. Settings and credentials are stored in ~/.craft-agent/ on your computer, with the credentials file encrypted. The code is under the Apache-2.0 license, and the Claude Agent SDK is also subject to Anthropic's Commercial Terms.
