What it is
CLI-Anything is an open-source project from the HKUDS team on GitHub, aimed at a simple problem: a lot of software only has a graphical interface, so AI agents can't use it directly. It analyzes an application's source code or APIs, generates a command-line interface (CLI) for it, and adds a SKILL.md file so agents such as Claude Code and Cursor can operate the software much as a person would click through menus. The repository includes a community registry, CLI-Hub: install cli-hub with pip and you can search, install and update ready-made CLIs, which already cover GIMP, Blender, FreeCAD, LibreOffice, Zotero, Obsidian and more. For software that isn't in the registry, its seven-phase generator lets you build one. What sets it apart is that instead of having an agent click on screenshots, it gives the software a command door the agent can understand.
Who it's for:developers who want coding agents to operate desktop software or internal tools. Readers who don't write code won't have a use for it.
Before you start: it needs Python 3.10 or later, and many CLIs are wrappers, so the underlying app such as GIMP or Blender has to be installed separately. Through these CLIs an agent can read and change your files and projects directly, and its reach grows with each adapter you add, so install only what you need. The repository also offers a meta-skill, cli-hub-meta-skill, that lets an agent find and install CLIs from the registry on its own; that means the agent installs software on your computer by itself, so we don't recommend turning it on. Pick and install CLIs yourself. Most CLI-Hub entries are community contributions, so judge their quality and safety yourself. Apache-2.0 licence.
